The condition of Alexander Popov, the Olympic champion who was stabbed in a street row on Sunday, was improving yesterday according to the president of the Russian swimming federation, Gennady Aleshin. The wound had affected one of his lungs and a kidney, but his condition is now stable. The 24- year-old Russian became the first swimmer to retain the Olympic 50 and 100 metres freestyle titles in Atlanta last month.
