Ray Bailey, the chairman of Shrewsbury, resigned yesterday for business reasons and handed over to the vice-chairman, Roland Wycherley, a local hotelier. Bailey will continue as a director.

Dimitar Penev, the Bulgarian coach who guided the country to their finest international football achievement by reaching the 1994 World Cup semi- finals, was sacked yesterday and his nephew, Lyuboslav Penev, was taken off the team. Penev had been criticised by the media because the team failed to advance from the group stages of last month's European championship and for playing his nephew in matches despite a lack of form.

Wolves are to pay Leicester City more than pounds 1m for the forward Iwan Roberts. The fee could rise to pounds 1.4m depending on appearances.
