Northern Ireland has been awarded the 1999 World Cross-Country Championships as a gesture towards the peace process in the province.

Iwan Thomas scored a surprise win over European champion Du'aine Ladejo and broke his own Welsh 400m record at a meeting in Slovenia. Thomas ran 45.73sec, beating his mark of 45.98.
