Alan Curbishley, the Charlton Athletic manager, is set to sign Barnsley midfielder Brendan O'Connell for pounds 125,000.
O'Connell, 29, who has been at Oakwell for the past six years, has agreed personal terms and will complete his move following a medical.
Curbishley made a move for O'Connell after Jeremy Goss's move from Norwich to The Valley fell through last week. Charlton are also giving a trial to the Colchester United midfielder Mark Kinsella.
Aston Villa made a record operating profit of pounds 5.8m during their Coca- Cola Cup-winning season - but the surplus was wiped out in building the club's most successful team since Villa's 1982 European Cup winning side, with pounds 11m spent on new players.
