The long jump final sees the battle rejoined between Mike Powell, Carl Lewis and the world record. The young Cuban, Ivan Pedroso, could mount a surprise attack. The women's 200 metres final should feature substantially the same figures who contested the 100m.
Also from that field, Gail Devers runs in the 100m hurdles. The compact American won silver at last year's world championships and faces the same in-form favourite, Lyudmila Narozhilenko of the Unified Team.
The second day of the decathlon should give Dave Johnson the chance to pull through in the absence of his US compatriot Dan O'Brien.
Jan-Ove Waldner and Jorgen Persson, winners of the past two world titles, could make it an all-Swedish final in the men's table tennis.
