MESS with the American volleyball team and you had better be ready for an extreme response. They were so disgusted at having their opening win against Japan reversed after a protest that they shaved their heads to show solidarity with the bald Bob Samuelson, whose shouting at a linesman sparked the decision.

The team, chasing a third successive gold, wore the mean look for their qualifying game against Canada, but played like pussycats before creeping through 16-14 in the fifth set.
