OLYMPICS / Barcelona 1992: Olympic Round-Up: Ghana go through
GHANA will meet Spain in the semi-final of the Olympic football tournament in Valencia on Wednesday. Kwame Ayew scored a hat-trick as the Africans overcame Paraguay 4-2 after extra time in Zaragoza last night.
Paraguay trailed to two Ayew goals until an own goal from Joachim Acheampong and a shot from Jorge Campos sent the game into the extra half-hour. Olli Rahman, who had come on as substitute, finished off a goalmouth scramble (114) after an Acheampong free-kick had hit the bar, and in the final minute Ayew shot past the Paraguayan keeper Ruben Ruiz Diaz for the final goal.
Spain reached the semi-finals at the expense of the highly-rated Italians, who failed to live up to their billing as favourites. On Saturday they were dispatched by Francisco Narvaez 38th-minute goal for Spain.
Australia pulled off a splendid 2-1 win over Sweden 2-1 last night and now meet Poland, 2-0 winners over Qatar, in the other semi-final. John Markovski put the Australians ahead with a 29th-minute volley, and Shaun Murphy doubled the lead 10 minutes after the break. Patrik Anderson's goal on the hour was not enough for the Swedes, who had Tomas Brolin carried off with a knee injury.
