RICHARD PHELPS had a disappointing ride and Britain's medal hopes sank without trace in the modern pentathlon yesterday. Phelps, 31, had begun the last day of the gruelling marathon in seventh place, but his mount in the riding event, Salamantino, proved difficult, refusing at the first obstacle.

Arkadiusz Skrzypaszek, of Poland, won the individual gold medal with 5,559 points and the Poles also took the team event with 16,018.

Phelps finished 13th in the individual event, five places below his team-mate, Graham Brookhouse. Britain were sixth in the team event.
