BRITAIN'S hopes of a medal in modern pentathlon appeared distant last night after a disappointing second day of competition. The British team of Richard Phelps, Graham Brookhouse and Dominic Mahony, bronze medallists in Seoul, had dropped to 11th place overall after yesterday's swimming and shooting disciplines.
Phelps, Britain's best chance of solo honours, also lies in 11th place in the individual standings. The competition features running today and concludes with the riding discipline tomorrow.
