SIMON TERRY, who won an individual archery bronze medal on Monday, won another yesterday, in the men's 70-metre team event with Steven Hallard and Richard Priestman, who repeated their feat of four years ago in Seoul.

Britain lost 236-234 to Spain in the semi-finals after beating Germany and Australia, but they then beat France 233-231 in a shoot-off.

For Priestman, a 37-year-old bank official from Preston, it was a happy end to an unsatisfactory year: 'I have been in poor form for most of the year, while Steven and Simon have been shooting very well,' he said.

Hallard, a 27-year-old design draughtsman from Rugby, said: 'All three of us shot well but it was a little nerve-racking. Last time we won the bronze it was just a straight competition with no knock-out.

'This time, with country shooting against country, it was certainly more exciting. You can't afford to make one mistake in the knock-out stages. In a normal competition of 144 arrows you can afford the one bad shot. Here every one counted and the pressure is far greater.'

Terry added: 'It's not too bad winning two bronze medals in two days. But I don't want to make a habit of it. I'd rather win golds.'

A 238-236 win over Finland in the final gave Spain their 10th gold of the Games. It was an unexpected victory: their best- placed archer, Antonio Vazquez, failed to reach the last 16 in the individual event, his team-mates coming 43rd and 50th.
