CHINA completed a hat-trick of table tennis gold medals when Deng Yaping, 19, won the women's singles with a 21-6, 21-8, 15-21, 23-21 win over her compatriot, Qiao Hong.
Deng's ferocious attack was so effective early on that there were worries she might finish the final before the International Olympic Committee's president, Juan Antonio Samaranch, had arrived to present the medals.
But, alive to the diplomatic niceties, she appeared to ease up before taking her second gold. Deng had joined up with Qiao to win the women's doubles two days previously. China also won the men's doubles.
