For the Oldershaw family from Canada, the wait for an Olympic canoeing medal finally ended yesterday, after 64 years.

Mark Oldershaw did what grandfather Bert, uncles Dean and Reed and father Scott all could not manage in eight summer Games when he won the bronze medal in the 1,000m C-1 at Eton Dorney.

Mark said: "To have come full circle and finally get the family name on the Olympic podium, I am really proud of this."

Mark brought his grandfather's paddle from 1948, signed by all his rivals, with him to the London Games for good luck.

Brownlee has stodgy secret

Following in the footsteps of Michael Phelps, who admits to eating chocolate chip pancakes and sugar-coated French toast for breakfast, Britain's gold medal-winning triathlete Alistair Brownlee, from Leeds, has revealed the secret to his incredible performance: a good old Yorkshire pudding.

"I'll eat all sorts of stodgy food, like pies, Yorkshire puddings, fish and chips – all of that," the 24-year-old said yesterday. "I don't mind a pizza, also."
