Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is facing increased calls to stage a homecoming parade for Team GB’s athletes to honour their greatest Olympics away performance at the Rio Games.

A parade has been held each summer following the last three Olympics and Paralympics but The Times revealed that no such plans have been made this year even though the British team have already broken through their 48 medal target.

A spokesperson for the Mayor told The Independent: “Everyone is thrilled by the performances of our Olympic athletes in Rio and looking forward to the Paralympics to follow. We are speaking to relevant partner organisations about the best way to mark their achievements.”

There remains a chance that Team GB could even better their achievements at the 2012 Games in London, where they won 65 medals in total.

At the time of publication, the British athletes have secured 50 medals - 19 of which being golds, 19 silvers and 12 bronzes. Boxer Nicola Adams is already guaranteed at least a bronze medal today (Thursday) while sailors Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark appear certain to add another gold.

Speaking to The Times, former Olympic rower Sir Matthew Pinsent said: “Team GB had a parade in 2004 when we won 30 medals and nine gold medals, so it seems very weird to have celebrated that and then now it looks as though it may not be good enough for everything the athletes have achieved in Rio.

“It’s my belief that this would be a great chance for the public to wave a flag or two and celebrate what all the athletes out here have done.”
