Outfits unveiled 100 days out from the Olympics

Team GB's kit for this summer's Olympics in Rio has been unveiled.

The outfits, predictably and rightly a mix of the white, blue and red of the Union Flag, were created by fashion designed Stella McCartney, who also designed the kits for the 2012 London Games.

Jessica Ennis-Hill and Tom Daley were among those who took to a stage in London to model the outfits manufactured by Adidas. The designs incorporate a unique British Coat of Arms.

"The inspiration behind the design was this idea of contrasting British tradition with a modern attitude," explained McCartney of the outfits that are 10 per cent lighter than their 2012 equivalents. "The new Coat Of Arms, specially commissioned for this project, and traditional Union Flag hues sit alongside bold textures and modern silhouettes to create a strong identity and make the athletes feel like a team.”

The rugby kit, which was needed after Rugby Sevens won inclusion among the Games' events for this summer's Olympics, is mostly red. Meanwhile the cycling outfits are largely blue.

The Olympics begin on 5 August, 100 days from today.

Yesterday the British Olympic Association said they were confident that a record haul for an Olympics on foreign soil is possible. That record was set in Beijing when 47 were won.

"London set the bar so high in terms of medals legacy but it's been a good thing - the impact it had on the nation and the sports," said BOA chief executive Bill Sweeney, who revealed that the BOA had invested double the amount spent on preparations for Beijing.

"There is a possibility for us to exceed the 47 medals overall in Beijing. It is a target for us."
