'Extremely drunk' Olympic champion curlers kicked out of tournament

An Olympic gold medallist and his team have been kicked out of a World Curling Tour event at the weekend for being "extremely drunk".

Ryan Fry, who won gold for Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and his team were removed on Sunday by a committee after complaints they were breaking brooms and swearing as they went out for their match it is claimed.

"They went out to curl and they were extremely drunk and breaking brooms and swearing and just unacceptable behaviour that nobody wants to watch or hear or listen to and it was just 'enough was enough,'" Red Deer Curling Centre facility manager Wade Thurber said.

Mr Thurber also says there was "some damage in the locker room" and other teams complained of belongings "being kicked around".

Fry said the committee made the right decision.

"I came to the event to play and enjoy the sport. My actions were truly disrespectful and embarrassing -- the committee was right to disqualify us from play," Fry said in a statement.

"I allowed myself to lose control and I offended people with my actions. I wish nothing more than to apologise to everyone individually."

The World Curling Tour said the Canadian team of Fry, Jamie Koe, Chris Schille, and DJ Kidby were ejected from the event for "unsportsmanlike behaviour" but did not elaborate on what led to its decision.

Fry won gold at the 2014 Olympics as a member of Team Canada along with Brad Jacobs, E.J. Harnden, Ryan Harnden and alternate Caleb Flaxey.
