The defending men's champions, Spain, snatched a 1-1 draw against France with a late goal from Oscar Garcia in Orlando on Monday.
France struck in the first half through Sylvain Legwinsky. Oscar missed a penalty before making amends - against the run of play - with his equaliser. In the other Group B game, Saudi Arabia beat Australia 2-1 in Miami.
In Group A in Washington DC, Portugal withstood an Argentine onslaught to earn a 1-1 draw while the United States beat Tunisia 2-0 in Birmingham, Alabama. The Manchester United player, Jovan Kirovski, put the States ahead late in the first half with a direct free-kick and, after Tunisia had had two men sent off, Brian Maisonneuve headed in an Alexi Lalas cross in the last minute.
