Merlene Ottey, Jamaica's dual 200 metres world champion, has withdrawn from the Grand Prix final in Monte Carlo on Saturday.

Ottey pulled a thigh muscle in the Berlin meeting last Friday and needs at least three more weeks to recuperate.

Steve Backley's second successive good season has earned him the No 2 spot in the TSB official men's British rankings behind Linford Christie. Jonathan Edwards, who ended his season unbeaten in all 14 competitions he has entered this year, has the most improved points average of the season but is still only fifth.
