Overseas Football: Blinker takes Feyenoord top
FEYENOORD took PSV Eindhoven's place at the top of the Dutch league yesterday thanks to their winger, Regi Blinker, who scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Volendam and later earned his first call-up to the national squad, for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against San Marino in Utrecht.
Feyenoord have a one-point lead over PSV, who were held 1-1 at home by Willem II Tilburg. A point further behind are Ajax, who beat Cambuur Leeuwarden 3-1, with Dennis Bergkamp on target twice. Theo Snelders, the Aberdeen goalkeeper, is also in the Dutch squad - which contains no PSV players.
Paulo Futre, the striker who snubbed his former club, Sporting Lisbon, by joining Benfica when he returned to Portugal from Atletico Madrid in January, scored a 66th-minute winner as his new side beat Bobby Robson's Sporting 1-0 last night. Benfica are three points behind the leaders, Porto, who overcame Espinho by the same margin, with Jorge Couto the scorer.
