THIS WEEKEND / Waterskiing

European barefoot championships

Chertsey

One of the highlights of the European barefoot championships at Chertsey, Surrey, this weekend will be the spectacular jump section. The world jump record has already been broken twice in the past year - by Richard Mainwaring, the British skier, last October and the Italian Massimiliano Collosio in July at the European grand prix in the Netherlands. A third skier, Bart Sileghem, of Belgium, also extended the distance, though this jump is not eligible for ratification. The three compete at Chertsey and the event could produce a record, even breaking the 30-metres barrier. A strong British team contests all three disciplines. Spectating is free.

How to get there: Spelthorne Barefoot Water Ski Club, Thameside Road, Laleham, Surrey. (Tel: 01932 571479). From junction 11 of the M25 take the A317 to Chertsey, crossing the bridge over the River Thames, turning immediately left towards the bridge carrying the M3; the club is on the right. Today: 8am preliminary rounds; tomorrow: 8am preliminary rounds, 4pm: women's tricks final, 5pm men's slalom final; Sunday: finals 10am women's slalom, 11am men's tricks, 1pm women's jump, 2.30pm men's jump, 4pm medal ceremony.
