Portugal's Joaquim Pinheiro wins the Biwako Mainichi Marathon

Portugal's Joaquim Pinheiro won the Biwako Mainichi Marathon in Japan in a course record time of 2hr 9min 32sec yesterday. The previous best was 2:10:49 set by Yuji Nakamura, of Japan, last year.

Gwen Torrence and Michael Johnson affirmed their status as America's leading sprinters with convincing wins at the USA Mobil Indoor Track and Field Championships, in Atlanta on Saturday, the final event of the grand prix. Johnson missed his own world indoor record in the 400 metre dash by only .03sec, finishing in 44.66sec. Torrence set a US indoor record in the 200m at 22.33se.
