Lanfranco Dettori, who deserted Ascot to ride in Germany yesterday, was out of luck when Germany, the horse, failed to complete a Group One hat-trick when fourth to Solon in the Europa Preis in Cologne. "He is over the top," Dettori said.

The British runners, Broadway Flyer (ridden by Michael Hills) and Beauchamp Hero (John Reid), finished sixth and last of 10, but Lord Huntingon's Penny Drops (Reid) had earlier won the Listed Preis von Koln by a neck and Jack Berry's Palacegate Episode (Dettori) won the Listed Iduna Nova Flieger Preis.
