KARINGA BAY, fifth in the 1990 Derby and winner of five Pattern races, has been retired after finishing last yesterday in the Group Three Preis Der Deutschen Einheit at Hoppegarten.

The son of Ardross will stand at Blackmore Vale Stud near Gillingham in Dorset. Trained for the last two seasons by Gary Moore, having earlier been with Geoff Lewis and Denys Smith, he amassed over pounds 270,000 in win and place prize money. Yesterday's race was won by David Smaga's 23-10 chance Marildo.

Edward Dunlop is to run Oak Stables, Newmarket, following the death of Alex Scott. Dunlop, 25, the son of Arundel trainer John Dunlop, will take over the licence until the end of the year.

Scunthorpe-born Kimberley Hart, 19, produced Ashover with a perfect late challenge to thwart Allesca and snatch the final of the York & Westminster Apprentice Series by half a length at Pontefract yesterday.
