Racing: Maguire rests after fall

ADRIAN MAGUIRE injured his right wrist in a fall at Edinburgh yesterday but believes he will be fit to ride at Warwick today.

Maguire took a crashing fall at the second last flight in the novices' handicap hurdle when leading on Boring. He was thrown clear as he hit the turf and gave up his rides in later races.

'It's a bit sore but I'm hoping it's just a sprain,' Maguire said. 'I'll see how it is in the morning and go for an x-ray if I think it's necessary.'

His rival in the race for the jump jockeys' championship, Richard Dunwoody, had a rather better afternoon on his first visit to the Musselburgh track. He scored on Lady Blakeney in the novices' handicap chase, with Maguire second on Travel Bound. That put the Ulsterman on 76 for the season, 25 behind Maguire.

The season's leading Flat rider, Lanfranco Dettori, took his tally for the year to nine winners after a double at Southwell yesterday. His success on No Submission also proved his ability to assess a winning opportunity. Having ridden the horse to victory last week, he was confident of scoring on the eight-year-old again. The horse's trainer, David Chapman, thought otherwise: 'I didn't think we'd beat Rad, but Frankie was just as sure that we would.'

Dettori's judgement proved spot- on. Always travelling strongly in the front rank, No Submission swept into the lead turning for home and stayed on to beat Rad.
