Racing: Royston Ffrench...Yet Again

Royston Ffrench made a career milestone losing his apprentices' claim when scoring on Yet Again, supported from 3-1 to 7-4 for the Armagh Handicap at Lingfield yesterday. The gelding, trained by Gay Kelleway, led three furlongs out to win by two and a half lengths from Time Can Tell.

Champion apprentice with 77 winners last year, Ffrench, 22, is off to Los Angeles todayto join US trainer Bobby Frankel for a month. On a previous visit last year, arranged by his boss Luca Cumani, Ffrench rode a couple of winners.

Just back from a fortnight's break in the Caribbean, Ffrench, who started out working in a Newmarket car wash at 16, said: "My next aim is to be champion jockey. If I could do that I will be the first black champ and it would mean a lot. "Losing my claim will be a big challenge, but I will be giving it 110 per cent."

Nigel Day celebrated his 38th birthday with success aboard Divinity (11- 4) in the opening Tyrone Maiden Stakes. The Sean Woods-trained gelding led at halfway but was passed by Raspberry Sauce, the 15-8 favourite, a quarter of a mile from home. Yet Divinity battled her way back and headed the market leader a furlong out to score by five lengths. Woods said: "She came from Clive Brittain's six weeks ago and my brief was to win with her as she is going to be a broodmare in June."
