Buick franks Dettori's judgement with fine treble

Sheikh Mohammed may have vexed him in fast-tracking Mickael Barzalona but Frankie Dettori is himself no mean judge of young riding talent. It was his endorsement that helped to persuade another long-standing patron, John Gosden, that William Buick deserved the chance as stable jockey – and here they are, barely two years later, taking Royal Ascot by storm.

After recently taking one step back, with an exasperating reverse in the Oaks, the 142-1 treble Gosden and Buick shared here yesterday represented three giant leaps forward.

Beaten in a Group Three on her previous start, Fallen For You quickened decisively for a breakthrough success in the Group One Coronation Stakes. Gosden also saddled the runner-up, Starscope, with the rest of the field well strung out behind – Homecoming Queen again failing to match her Guineas form in eighth.

"The fast pace suited her," Buick said. "Things have conspired against her in the past but today everything went perfect. She finished off really well and this is not a fluke."

It is easy to picture Newfangled returning this time next year for the same race, following a sensational display in the Albany Stakes for two-year-old fillies. Whatever the inconsistencies of Godolphin, Sheikh Mohammed has had the sense to keep plenty of horses with Gosden as well, in the silks of Princess Haya, and the big man keeps them reliably involved at the top level. Newfangled had the race sewn up soon after halfway and maintained an advantage of two and a half lengths over Agent Allison, despite drifting as the bit slipped through her mouth.

"There's a strong headwind and our plan had been to settle in behind the pace," Gosden said. "But she had other ideas. She's got a lot of speed and class, and while on today you wouldn't say she would get a mile, at home she looks like she'd go any trip because she settles."

On that basis she is widely quoted at 10-1 for next season's Qipco 1,000 Guineas, but in the meantime Gosden will give her a break before aiming at the Lowther Stakes at York in August.

She was completing a significant double for her young sire, New Approach, who won the Derby for Princess Haya and had already produced a striking winner of the Coventry Stakes this week.

Buick completed his hat-trick in the silks of George Strawbridge, on Gatewood in the Wolferton Handicap – in the process atoning for his only reverse to that point, when the same owner's Thought Worthy had hung under pressure in the King Edward VII Stakes. Frankel's brother Noble Mission was briefly hampered as a result, but rallied into the lead only to be collared by his own stablemate, Thomas Chippendale. Sir Henry Cecil may now train the winner for the Ladbrokes St Leger.

The biggest cheer of the day, however, was reserved for the presentation of the Queen's Vase. The Duke of Edinburgh had already been invited to hand over the trophy – which was received by his own wife after the runaway success of her well-backed filly, Estimate.
