Lewis Ferguson fall video: 18-year-old jockey walks away from 'horror fall' after being unseated by Merrion Square

Ferguson was said to be competing in his first ever race over jumps when he fell off the horse and flipped over the fence

Lewis Ferguson suffered what can be described as one of the most extraordinary falls in horse racing on Wednesday, yet somehow emerged unscathed.

Ferguson was approaching the final furlongs of the 16.20 race at Wincanton Racecourse yesterday, when his horse Merrion Square mounted a charge for the front.

The 4/7 favourite approached the final fence, and all seemed well, but suddenly Merrion Square decided to change its path and leave the jockey clutching onto the reins in a bid to maintain control. It didn’t work.

He added afterwards that "on the whole [I] was absolutely fine."

Eight-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls revealed that Ferguson was back out riding on Thursday morning, while Wincanton’s clerk of the course Barry Johnson described the unseating as the worst fall he had seen in his time watching horse racing.

"He walked into the parade ring and was chatting away as if nothing had happened, calm as you like. It was amazing, I've never seen anything like it," said Johnson.
