Scotland's Colin McRae had forged a 16-second lead over the world champion, Juha Kankunnen, by the end of the second day of the Australian Rally yesterday. In a thrilling final stage of the day, McRae, in a Subaru Impreza, edged out his Finnish rival's Toyota Celica by just one second for a total time of 1hr 42min 39sec, with 13 of the 30 stages completed.
