Martin Rowe, the holder of the Mobil 1 British Championship title, made a flying start to the defence of his title yesterday after overcoming an early scare. Rowe roared into the lead at the Vauxhall Rally of Wales despite suffering a problem with the water pump in his Renault Megane on the way from the event's base at Wrexham to the first stage. Rowe, from the Isle of Man, still managed to open a significant early advantage of 19.1sec over second-placed Gwyndaf Evans, of Wales.
