GIANFRANCO CUNICO, of Italy, drove his Ford Escort to victory in the San Remo Rally, beating the defending world champion, Carlos Sainz, by 1min 36sec after yesterday's last stage.

Cunico's first victory in a world championship event frustrated Sainz's hopes of giving the Italian team, Lancia, its first victory of the season on home soil.

Cunico, who teamed up with his fellow Italian, Stefano Evangelisti, took the lead on the opening day and completed the race - the 11th world championship event - in 6hr 19min 40sec.
