Redgrave v Great Dane
From Mr J Meacham
Sir: I read Ian Stafford's interview with Steve Redgrave in Monday's Sport section. There is no doubt that we were given an insight into the career of one of the most prodigious sporting talents of our time. The combination of experience and ability that he will take to Atlanta should add to his formidable medal tally and must represent the nearest thing to a certainly for a gold medal that Britain can boast.
Without wishing to appear churlish, I would like to set the record straight regarding the winning of four consecutive gold medals. This feat has already been achieved by Paul Elvstrom of Denmark in the single-handed sailing event between 1948 and 1960. Not for nothing has he become known as "the great Dane".
Yours faithfully
JOHN MEACHEN
