Rugby League round-up: Fallon lights the fuse for Leeds

JIM FALLON, the former Bath rugby union winger, put Leeds on their way to their first championship win of the season when he scored the opening try in a 34-6 win over Yorkshire rivals Hull KR at Headingley yesterday.

After a slow start, Leeds raced away with the game, Fallon's breakthrough and another from the game's dominant player, Garry Schofield, breaking the visitors resistance. Two more tries early in the second half from the Test forward, Paul Dixon, confirmed the home side's superiority.

Castleford are also off the mark, adding to promoted Leigh's troubles by winning 38-0 at Hilton Park. Leigh, stunned by the resignation of manager Jim Crellin after only three matches in charge, were outclassed by a side who ran in four tries in 15 minutes before the break. They have now lost their last four home matches.

In contrast, St Helens managed to keep their unbeaten record, but were pushed hard by Sheffield before winning 18-10. Allan Hunte scored a superb individual second-half try for Saints.

Two tries from the Australian scrum-half, Craig Coleman, helped Salford to a thrilling 27-22 victory over Halifax. The former South Sydney player, appearing in only his second match for the club, struck twice in the second half.

In the Second Division, Oldham are the only side with a 100 per cent record after Featherstone Rovers' surprise defeat at Rochdale Hornets. Oldham beat Alex Murphy's Huddersfield 28-24.
