Clem Thomas, the rugby union journalist, commentator and former Wales captain, died suddenly in a Swansea hospital yesterday at the age of 67.

Thomas - a Cambridge Blue who also played for the Barbarians, Harlequins and London Welsh - made 26 appearances for Wales (nine as captain) between 1949 and 1959 while with Swansea. He was also a member of the 1955 Lions side which toured South Africa, drawing the series 2-2.

During a varied career he stood as a Liberal candidate for the Gower in the 1974 General Election, polling almost 20 per cent of the votes, and was also a butcher and auctioneer.
