Rugby Union: Bath follow Lions and decide to leave out Webb: England's full-back given cold shoulder by his club for championship decider

IT has not been the best of fortnights for Jon Webb. Overwhelmed by Ireland and ignored by the Lions' selectors he has now been dumped by his club, Bath, as they try to clinch the Courage Clubs' Championship tomorrow.

If they were to beat London Scottish at the Recreation Ground and Wasps were to lose at Orrell, the title would be theirs for the fourth time in six years, barring a Wasps cricket score and a Bath defeat in the final matches.

But England's full-back will have to win his place back, having lost it to Jon Callard. Callard, the regular full-back before Webb's arrival at Bath two and a half years ago, is retained after scoring two tries in Bath's most recent win, at West Hartlepool when Webb was not available.

Both sides have much to play for, as defeat would almost certainly mean relegation for London Scottish, and their cause has not been helped by the absence of the internationals, Iain Morrison and Derek White.

Morrison, who picked up an injury playing in the Hong Kong sevens last weekend, is one of six full internationals in Scotland's squad for the World Sevens at Murrayfield from 16 to 18 April. The squad will be captained by London Scottish's uncapped scrum-half, David Millard. Australia's challenge will be spearheaded by David Campese, Michael Lynagh and Willie Ofahengaue.

Steve Bates, whose wife is expecting a baby, and Dean Ryan, who has work commitments, have pulled out of England's tour to Canada next month. Kieran Bracken, of Bristol, replaces Bates and Bedford's Mark Rennell comes in for Ryan.
