Rugby Union: Chalmers injury 'totally crucial' to outcome: Calcutta Cup post-mortem on Twickenham's tale of two stand-offs

STUART BARNES (England's fly-half starting a Five Nations match for the first time): I've waited a long time for this and I had a lot to prove to myself. But what a joy it was to play alongside such a talented back division. I was pretty pleased with my performance but I always thought I would play well today. As for Rory's try, it was nice to be involved in something like that. It just shows the potential we've got but I believe we have an outstanding team who can challenge the big boys. The only person I had to prove anything to was myself. Craig (Chalmers) is a bloody nice guy and a great player - it's hard to know what to say. I'm very upset for him. I'm not even thinking about the Lions. I don't think I could have done my chances any harm today, but I'm not going to predict what's going to happen.

GEOFF COOKE (England's manager): He (Barnes) made sparkling attacks out of defensive situations. He performed very well and it is a pity we did not win more ball. Tactically we had the Scots just where we wanted them. I'm still unhappy with all sorts of things. We got only bits of our game right and did not get our line-out working for a number of reasons.

IAN McGEECHAN (Scotland's coach): He (Craig Chalmers) is having a plate inserted in his arm and has no chance of being considered for selection for the Lions, who leave in mid-May. Craig's injury was totally crucial to the outcome. England scored twice as soon as Craig went off and changed the complexion of the game. Craig had been playing the best rugby of his life.

WILL CARLING (England's captain): We were on song in the middle of the match when we got possession but they did not manage to spoil. A lot of players performed well today after not playing that well so far. But it is not down to a single player. There was some great team play today.

GAVIN HASTINGS (Scotland's captain): It (Chalmers's injury) was a real blow. There is nothing extra to say.

RORY UNDERWOOD (England wing and try-scorer): I think Stuart (Barnes) did make a difference. We did get good balls today, and obviously the way Stuart played helped us. For my try, Stuart had only got average ball but made a great break. Everyone accused me of being past it, of lacking concentration. But one mistake doesn't stop me being a good player.

TONY UNDERWOOD (England wing and try-scorer after pass from brother Rory): He (Rory) did that when we played against South Africa. He's got this habit of doing it - maybe he should be a centre from now on.
