Faced with legal action, the New South Wales Rugby Football Union has defied the International Rugby Board and reinstated Brett Papworth, the former Wallaby who switched to rugby league five years ago with Eastern Suburbs, the Sydney club. IRB laws state that a former union player who takes up the professional game may not return to the amateur code to play or referee.
