DONAL LENIHAN, the Ireland manager, yesterday criticised the French referee, Joel Dume, for his handling of the bruising 33-0 second Test defeat against South Africa that threatened to erupt into violence.

Lenihan insisted that while Dume may have dished out three yellow cards during the match in Pretoria on Saturday, he should have sent off the South African scrum-half, Joost van der Westhuizen, for kicking Malcolm O'Kelly.

"The tone of the match was set when their No 9 kicked our player on the ground, and was able to remain on the field," Lenihan said.

Van der Westhuizen put the home side - who beat Ireland 37-13 last week - in front on 17 minutes. Johna Erasmus and James Dalton added further tries before the break.

The home side emphasised their dominance in the second half with tries from Gary Teichmann and Pieter Roussow.
