Mike Phillips has been sacked by Bayonne after being accused of attending a training session drunk.

The Wales scrum-half, who has 77 caps, was told of the French club’s decision on Saturday and is to receive official confirmation of the decision by letter today.

Phillips was accused of being intoxicated when the squad met on 11 October, the morning after Grenoble had been defeated 37-6 in the Amlin Challenge Cup.

Team-mates Dwayne Haare and Stephen Brett also faced the board on Tuesday to answer for their involvement in the same incident.

Phillips sat out Friday’s 24-19 victory over Montpellier while Brett started the match with Haare on the bench.
