England are united behind Eddie Jones despite disappointing South Africa tour, insists Steve Borthwick

Steve Borthwick insists England’s coaching team are united behind Eddie Jones as they look to sign off their disappointing tour to South Africa with a victory at Newlands.

The Springboks have built an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series after posting wins in Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, extending England’s losing run to five Tests and placing Jones’s future in doubt.

The Rugby Football Union has backed its head coach even though one more loss would register the nation’s worst sequence of results since 2006 when Andy Robinson was sacked. Borthwick insists Jones’ coaching lieutenants are similarly supportive of the Australian.

Looked too fired up for the match early on as he sought out any scrap possible on the field in an attempt to take the aggression to the Springboks. Some lovely passes out the back-field and sent Brown over for his try.

Another early try got England off to a flying start. Reverted to his more natural position at full-back, and made an important tackle on Dyantyi that halted a quick Springboks counter-attack.

Made one good break in the second half that Launchbury followed with a knock-on, but otherwise he struggled to have an impact on the match. Looked to kick more, which brought early success, but South Africa soon wised up to the tactic.

Controlled the game well and kept his foot on the throttle while showing is array of passing ability. Only blip was a missed penalty he really should have kicked.

Wasn’t given the time and space that he was afforded in the first Test early one but adapted well and was again one of the key influencers on the game. Kept the England back three pinned deep with smart box-kicks.

One of the standout players on the special occasion of his 100th cap. A glorious break in the first-half led to Vermeulen’s try, and he stood up well in the scrum after an early wobble. Took his leave early in the second half after an impressive shifts.

Brought good physicality to the Springbok defence and made one strong break for about a 30-metre gain.

A good return to the side and justified his selection over Jean-Luc du Preez. Good support play and disruptive in the breakdown, even if that led to a slap from Vunipola.

Duane Vermeulen – 9 out of 10

Brilliant across the park in all aspects as he scored a try with a lovely finish, stepping inside Ford and Billy Vunipola, got stuck into England with some huge tackles and carried strongly throughout. The best player by some way.

“I have worked for Eddie for a long time now. I see consistency,” said forwards coach Borthwick. “He’s an excellent coach – we all know that – and what this England team has done over the last couple of years with the work he has led has been tremendous.

“I see someone who is continuing to work to help this team get better, as we all are. He is leading this squad tremendously well and we believe in him and know we will turn this around and get the results we want.

“As coaches, we always have robust conversations because that is the nature of coaching. We discuss the direction we want and get on with delivering it as a coaching team, and that is with Eddie Jones as our head coach. We believe that we will turn this around and get the results we want.”

England have slipped to sixth in the world rankings on the back of a dramatic slump that began midway through the Six Nations.

“We all know the results are not where we want them to be,” added Borthwick. “I along with everybody else involved in the England squad is determined to turn the results around and get a win this weekend.”
