Hilton, who suffered the original fracture playing against France last October, has been told that he repeated the break in the defeat by St Helens last Sunday.

It is the latest in a series of injuries that have blighted the career of the 25-year-old front-rower and means that he will face a struggle to re-establish himself again next season, when Warrington hope to have Harvey Howard - the Great Britain prop currently with Brisbane - in their pack.

For tonight's game at the London Broncos, Hilton is replaced by the returning Danny Nutley, while the 20-year-old Jamie Stenhouse, a product of the club's Academy side, will make his debut on the wing.

Rob Smyth will play on the flank for the Broncos, despite having a contract offer for next season from Warrington, with whom he spent a month's loan.

Warrington will press ahead with merger talks with Sale rugby union club, following their success in the first stage of their planning application for a new stadium that could be shared by the two teams. "It is the way forward," said Warrington's chief executive, Peter Deakin.

In tonight's other match, Graham Mackay will move from the wing to play his first game as a centre for Leeds against Wakefield, filling in for the injured Richie Blackmore. Paul Sterling will be on the wing as Leeds try to bounce back after the end of their 13-game winning run at Castleford last week.

"That result came a week too early for us," said the Wakefield coach, Tony Kemp, who has warned his team to expect a backlash from Leeds.

Super League's bottom club, Huddersfield-Sheffield, have released the French centre or full-back, Yacinne Dekkiche, who has been on loan to them from Avignon for most of the season. "Yacinne hasn't quite made the step up, although he has the potential to do so," said Phil Veivers, who is acting as caretaker coach while the newly appointed Tony Smith waits for a work permit. "He has been missing his family back home and has not quite settled in as we would both have liked."
