England suffered a 24-15 defeat against Six Nations champions Ireland to confirm their worst finish in the championship in 35 years, with Eddie Jones' side ending up fifth in the table.

The hosts managed to match Ireland try-for-try with three scores apiece, but while Johnny Sexton kicked all three of his conversions along with a Conor Murray penalty, Owen Farrell missed all of his.

The loss is England's third straight defeat, something they have not experienced since 2006, and leaves them third in the World Rugby rankings behind Ireland and No 1 team New Zealand.

Ireland surged out of the blocks and were 14-0 to the good through tries from Garry Ringrose and CJ Stander, before England hit back with an Elliot Daly score after half an hour.

However, a third Irish try just before half-time took the game out of England's reach as Jacob Stockdale scored his 11th try in nine Tests, and even though England scored two more times through another Daly score and Jonny May, there was no stopping Ireland from claiming the Grand Slam.
