Six Nations: France in profile

The opening weekend of the Six Nations did not disappoint as Wales, Ireland and France all got off to winning starts, while pre-tournament favourites England have been left to pick up the pieces from what was a stunning defeat in Paris.

Scotland and Italy also got their campaigns off to the worst possible start, although like England the Scots were able to claim a losing bonus point from the Dublin defeat. The same could not be said of the Azzurri though, who found themselves nilled in Cardiff to suffer a 23rd consecutive loss in the Six Nations.

Wales meanwhile lead the way at the top of the table, having taken a maximum five-point haul from their opener to continue Wayne Pivac’s undefeated start to life post-Warren Gatland. Josh Adams scored a hat-trick to continue his incredible rate of scoring, while Nick Tompkins announced his arrival on the international stage in style.

Ireland meanwhile will have concerns over their performance even though they made a winning start, with Johnny Sexton registering all 19 points as they kept Gregor Townsend’s side at bay. It could have been so different though had Scotland captain Stuart Hogg not butchered a glorious chance to score as he dropped the ball over the line in what proved to be yet another near-miss for the Blues.

Ireland remain at home next weekend as they host fellow unbeaten side Wales in what will be a mouth-watering opener on Saturday, before Scotland and England look to chalk up their first wins in the Calcutta Cup clash at BT Murrayfield, while France and Italy wrap up the weekend’s action on Sunday afternoon in Paris.
