England avoided a series whitewash by beating South Africa 25-10 in their third and final Test at Cape Town’s Newlands Stadium, snapping their six-match losing streak in the process.

In what proved to be a complete contrast to the first two opening attack-minded contests, a gritty and physical affair unfolded on what was a drenched pitch, following heavy rainfall throughout the day.

As a result, England led at half-time 6-3 thanks to two Owen Farrell penalties, with South Africa’s reply coming through an Elton Jantjies kick at goal on the stroke of the break.

But after the restart England were able to stretch their lead with another two penalties, only for the Springboks to hit back with a Jessie Kriel try put the home side ahead – for the best part of a minute as Farrell then kicked his fifth penalty.

But the game-changing moment soon followed when Danny Cipriani – starting a Test for the first time in a decade – chipped through for Jonny May to run onto and score England’s only try. Farrell’s conversion, plus a sixth penalty, sealed a deserved victory to end a disappointing summer on a high note.
