Leicester Tigers promise ‘action if appropriate’ following reports of pub fight in Portugal

Leicester Tigers have said they "will take further action if appropriate" after a number of their players were reportedly involved in a violent confrontation at a Portuguese pub.

The players were at the Irish Pub in Vilamoura, a coastal resort in the Algarve, shortly after 11.30pm on Monday night when tensions flared.

Tom Youngs, club captain, was reportedly left with a wound on his face after being struck by a flying glass.

Geordan Murphy, in his first pre-season as head coach, visited the pub and spoke to police. The Irishman, a former Tigers player, is believed to be satisfied that his players will not face charges.

“The players made us aware of an incident when they were given a night off,” a club spokesman said on Tuesday night.

“The club have co-operated fully with the authorities and while we believe this is the end of the matter, we will take further action if appropriate.”

Footage claimed to have been seen by the Daily Mail shows the Tigers players being confronted and punched by men believed to be security staff, with the players responding by pushing into an outside area.

Youngs moved himself to the front of the group and appears to attempt to defuse the fracas, standing with hands outstretched as glasses were thrown back and forth.

It also reportedly shows the players acting boisterously and being refused further service, resulting in extra security arriving. Front-rower Greg Bateman was supposedly punched, as well as another player, whose face is apparently obscured.

An eye-witness account alleges that the players again clashed with security staff before local police were called.

Tigers are currently at a pre-season training camp in the Algarve.
