Round-Up: Greenwood to retire at end of the season

Will Greenwood, one of the most talented English centres in the modern era, will retire at the end of the season. "I can no longer perform to the levels I wish," he said. "My body is falling apart."

The 33-year-old Harlequin won 55 caps for England, the last as a replacement in a 21-19 loss to Australia in the autumn of 2004, and was an integral part of the team who won the 2003 World Cup. The son of the England flanker and coach Dick Greenwood and a graduate of Durham University, which also produced the England centres Will Carling and Phil de Glanville, he scored 31 tries for England and played in two Tests for the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand in 2005. He also toured to South Africa in 1997 and Australia in 2001.

Yesterday's Super 14 programme featured victories for the Crusaders, 39-10 against the Blues; the Waratahs, 31-16 against the Sharks; and the Highlanders, 30-15 in Cape Town against the Stormers. Dan Carter's unbeaten Crusaders - defending champions, five-time winners, twice runners-up - lead the table, as usual.

Bedford booked a return to Twickenham with a 37-35 win at Exeter in the semi-finals of the Powergen National Trophy. The Blues beat Plymouth Albion 14-13 in the final of last year's Powergen Challenge Shield, the equivalent to this year's second-tier tournament, and will meet the winners of today's game between Quins and Nottingham in a curtain-raiser for the Powergen Cup final on Sunday 9 April.

The Borders hooker Ross Ford will not play again this season after damaging knee ligaments. Glasgow's Scott Lawson takes his place in Frank Hadden's Scotland squad to face Ireland on Saturday.
