Jonny Wilkinson kicked six conversions as Newcastle ended their Guinness Premiership season on a stout note with a 54-19 demolition of relegated Leeds at Kingston Park. Three of the home side's eight tries were run in by 25-year-old wing Anthony Elliott - one of a full complement of 22 English qualified players fielded by the Falcons.

Newcastle's other touchdowns came from Mathew Tait (in the first minute), Ben Woods, Tom May, Mike McCarthy and Ollie Phillips. Leeds trailed 35-0 at half-time, but they rallied after the break with tries by James Isaacson, Chris Murphy and Danny Care.

Sale, whose prop Andrew Sheridan is likely to face surgery this summer on a damaged neck disc and thus miss England's tour of Australia, survived a storming second-half comeback by Northampton to edge a Franklin's Gardens thriller 36-34, finish top of the table and secure a home draw against Wasps in next Sunday's Championship play-off semi-finals.

After racing into a 26-3 lead, Sale only clinched victory when Bruce Reihana's last-minute penalty fell short. Sale's tries came from Ignacio Fernandez Lobbe, Ben Foden, Steve Hanley, Valentin Courrent and Oriol Ripol while Reihana, Carlos Spencer, Daniel Browne, David Quinlan and Ben Cohen all went over for Saints.

Bath beat Worcester 25-22 at the Rec. Zak Feaunati claimed two of their four tries, and Joe Maddock and Michael Stephenson also dotted down. But Worcester crossed four times themselves - through Thomas Lombard (twice), Dale Rasmussen and Tom Harding.

In the Super 14, NSW Waratahs blew a chance of overtaking the Crusaders at the top of the table when they went down 37-33 to the Chiefs in Hamilton.
