Saracens have signed the Argentina winger Tomas de Vedia from the Buenos Aires club San Isidro on a one-year deal.

De Vedia, 24, can also play full-back and was the leading try-scorer in Argentina's national competition last season. He is yet to win a full Test cap but did play for Argentina A at last month's Rainbow Cup in Portugal.

"Tomas is a very exciting player and we're delighted to have him as part of the squad," Saracens' director of rugby, Alan Gaffney, said yesterday. "He's mainly a winger but can play anywhere in the back three and his record for both club and country prove that he is very good at finding the line.

"He is quick and is a very powerful player and we believe he will make an impact here. It's a great opportunity for him and also for us."

Elsewhere, the South Africa winger Akona Ndungane and forward Pierre Spies will make their Test debuts in Saturday's Tri-Nations match against Australia in Brisbane. Ndungane partners Bryan Habana on the wing, with Spies forming a new back-row combination alongside Juan Smith and Joe van Niekerk. The hooker, John Smit, will captain the Springboks for the 29th time.
