SAILING

Squalls ripped through the southern Pacific yesterday, knocking down at least three of the 13 yachts still competing in the BOC round-the-world solo race. An American, Arnet Taylor Jnr, and two Britons, Robin Davie and Harry Mitchell, reported being knocked over. Christophe Auguin, of France, turned in another 300-mile day to remain solidly in the lead. His countryman Jean Luc Van den Heede, however, sailed a straighter course to cut Auguin's advantage down to 142 miles from 239 just two days earlier.
