The nine-strong all-woman crew of skipper of Tracy Edwards' 92-foot catamaran, Royal & Sun Alliance, set off at dawn from yesterday from New York in a bid to break the transatlantic record of six days 13 hours and three minutes set by Serge Madec's Jet Services in 1990. The other aim is to set an all-woman record as part of the build-up to attacking at the end of this year the new round the world record of 71 days 14hr 18min 8sec set by Olivier de Kersauson on 19 May.

Big breezes, many capsizes and some inevitable gear damage allowed the Budgen brothers and Dick Parker to win the second second Aquatonic 18ft skiff regatta at Southend in a four-race schedule yesterday to make up for a lost Saturday.
