Lawrie Smith could take heart yesterday as he stretched his lead in the Whitbread 60 Intrum Justitia to nine miles over Spain's Javier de la Gandara in Galacia, writes Stuart Alexander. But he also knew that, two miles further back, Chris Dickson, winner in Tokio of leg one of the Whitbread Round the World Race, now has him in his sights after one week and 2,000 miles of the second leg to Fremantle. In winds which have eased down, Grant Dalton heads the 14-strong fleet overall in his maxi New Zealand Endeavour, has a 64-mile advantage over his nearest maxi rival, Pierre Fehlmann in Merit Cup, and is a further 19 miles ahead of Smith.
