Carlos Sainz of Spain gained an unexpected and controversial victory in the Indonesia Rally. However Sainz's win remained provisional pending a hearing by rally stewards.

The Spaniard was alleged to have received outside assistance when only a tyre change was permitted under the world rally championship's complicated rules.

Britain's world champion Colin McRae, the leader on the first two days of the three-day event, crashed out when he went off the road at high speed and wrecked his Subaru Impreza.
